Theo
Radical Belgian wit for the brave and the bright.
The Story
In 1987, Wim Somers and Patrick Hoet reached a breaking point. These Antwerp opticians had enough of the beige, predictable frames cluttering their shelves. They craved spectacles that shouted. Together, they launched Theo—an anagram of Hoet—and crashed the 1989 Silmo Paris trade show with a collection that shattered industry norms.
A rebellion against the mundane soon became a global benchmark. Today, Wim's three sons—Mik, Toon, and Jan—grip the wheel. While Mik and Toon steer innovation and marketing, Jan runs the theo–Somers Optiek store alongside their mother, Jamme. This family pact protects the brand’s original spark. It ensures every frame carries the wit and rebellious soul that first ignited the business.
The designs are born in Antwerp, but the frames themselves are made in premium workshops in the Jura region of France. Crafting a Theo frame avoids clinical assembly lines; it demands manual obsession. Each pair passes through at least 25 pairs of skilled hands. These artisans hand-paint finishes and forge components, transforming cold industrial materials into vibrant, kinetic objects.
The motto "theo loves you!" defines the spirit. This phrase escaped the gravity of a corporate boardroom. It began as a spontaneous, handwritten note on an order form. That raw gesture of affection now anchors the brand’s relationship with its global tribe.
Theo ignores the eyes to dress the face. They bypass traditional optics to partner with external rebels like James Van Vossel and matali crasset. These collaborations inject fresh perspectives, treating the frame as a piece of industrial design. By ignoring trends, Theo delivers stability and reliability. The collection architecture charts a journey from accessible daily wears to experimental concepts.
Every piece serves a singular master: joy. Whether carving high-grade titanium or layering Mazzucchelli acetate, the goal remains unchanged—to make the wearer happy. From Antwerp to The Oculus, Theo proves that radical originality holds enduring power. This is design for individualists who view their spectacles as a primary expression of identity.
Eye-witness — the art of asymmetry
The Eye-witness collection dismantles the rules of symmetry. These designs embrace raw finishes and follow a strict "alphabet" naming convention, with each series launching under a new letter. The stainless steel frames carve a 3D optical illusion onto the face. By fusing a base contour colour with a shadow colour, the design suggests volume and depth where none exists. It is perspective reimagined as wearable art.

Signature Style
The Theo wearer rejects the status quo. They are design lovers and individualists who treat their face as a canvas. These clients do not shop for medical devices; they curate their visual volume. Theo charts this journey with the "Boldness Bar." This spectrum moves from "easy to wear" designs with architectural precision to "expressive" and "extreme" art pieces. It allows the wearer to decide if their frames should whisper or shout on any given day.
Selection begins with a mood. The "Andy" from the Painter Palettes series delivers dazzling transparency through superimposed colours. For those seeking structural strength, "Isohel" from the Isolines family carves a modern navigator shape that suits broader faces perfectly. Meanwhile, "Mascara" from the Make Up collection uses bold hexagonal lines and high-contrast yellow highlights to animate the character. Whether seeking a subtle lift or a full-on statement, the Theo wearer finds a frame that fits their rebellious spirit.
